How accurate is the gas gauge?

I was very low on gas yesterday, readout said 3 miles till empty. I was around 15 miles from home so I pulled into the closest Sunoco to fill up w/ 94. Thats when I realize I left home without my wallet!! Pulled 3 bucks in quarters out of the car, go put in a gallon and start home. As soon as I leave the gas station the car is now reading 0 miles left!

So basically this cars math is 3 miles left plus 1 gallon of gas = 0 miles left.

I drove another 30 miles after putting in that 1 gallon and still reading 0 miles....what gives??

Anyone run this car dry yet just to see how many miles we have left once it reads 0 miles?

Funny you brought this up. Just this morning, my car was showing "blank" on the fuel remaining, so I got very nervous and pulled right into the gas station. The total gallons I pumped in was 16.4 gallons, I thought perhaps the full capacity is 17 gallons???

I think the computer can get very confused. After a 200 mile trip in mine this weekend, the gauge showed about 1/4 tank, but the computer said my remaining range was 34 miles. Huh? I stopped and filled it up and it looks like 1/4 tank was the one that was accurate.

A few cars that I have been in do this, I think it's just a precaution so that you get the message early that your tank is really empty now and you need to go get so gas... Also if anyone saw that top gear episode where jeremy drove that audi some great distance with one tank of gas he was on E for a few miles also and it didnt die out

the computer of the car make a average comsuption of the car since the last start up of the engine, for example if you are driving a few minutes in 1st gear at 4000 rpm, then the computer assume that you are going to continue with the same pattern and adjust the average comsuption of the car that's why the computer the computer shows 10 km remaining, but if you change the way you are drinving, the computer adjust to 15, 20 or maybe 30 km remaining dependent of how many liters are remaining in the tank!

Sorry for my english

I ran mine a few miles past zero, and when I went to fill, based on capacity and the amount I put in, I had under a gallon left. When that thing says zero, it pretty much means zero (no useful "reserve")

With those two criteria, you must be filling up only when you like it.
