Like the previous years this event has been run, this is the largest gathering of BMWs in the UK, estimated at over 1,100 cars.

With good weather forecasted, I went along with camera in hand.

This year, a huge turnout of E31, E36 and Alpina machines on display.

I hope you enjoy the photos. I tried to capture everything from historic, group classic, modern classic, modern, current and modified.
MINI was also present but sorry, I did not take any photos.

Using AI...solving your BMW and your daily life issues

Bottom line first: AI can help solve problems for the average person that even a year ago lead to a dead-stop/dead end in finding a solution. And this apples to BMW diagnostics/repair too.

I have prided myself to be able to diagnose and fix my own BMW issues that came up (luckily not many) during the last 13 years of my current aging F30. Without the help of this Forum I would have not been able to accomplish 90% of the retrofitting that I have done. I learned so much from these threads and so many people helped along the way. This is the part that I may be missing the most, if AI takes over as the "authoritative authority" on diagnosis and repair guides.

A warning with AI! You have to know some basics about the subject you are searching about, as based on the complexity of the topic, AI will make mistakes. And if you are clueless about your topic, you will go down some time-wasting and expensive rabbit holes. Guess how I know it...

However, let me illustrate what AI can do for you: I am an electronics hobbyist with no formal background other then some basics. For about 6 years 2018-2024 I was working in my spare time on some basic electrical/mechanical stuff that were closely related gadgets. I spent a lot of time on Google searching for answers, in various forums asking for assistance, etc I was never able to complete what I wanted, because of my lacking knowledge (regardless how much I learned online and from my mistakes...and I am not dumb). And it was not worth to pay someone to help, because that is no fun and defeats the purpose of the hobby.

About a month ago I dusted off my old projects and used Claude AI, Gemini AI, Grok AI, and couple of other more restrictive ones. In a couple of weeks of intense "work" I was able to get near the finishing line with projects that took me 6 years to get to 70%. A warning: you need to know enough to recognize when the AI makes a mistake, but you do not need to know as much a real professional engineer. However, the final work can be professional quality/level work with AI help.

How does this tie in with BMW and this Forum? I have increasingly used AI to help diagnose and validate error codes and potential solutions. Some of these with problems that I was able to solve previously in the old-fashioned way: first-hand experience, online research, with forum members help. And since I already knew the answer/solution to the problem at hand...I was able to evaluate the AI's response. Astonishingly accurate and comprehensive.

If you use AI, do not forget that often "garbage in...is...garbage out". Although AI can detect and re-interpret most misspellings, grammatical or syntax errors, you have to able to get your request into the ballpark. The more specific and comprehensive you are, the more accurate and focused answer you will receive from the AI.

I do not know if the AI will replace the awesome members of this Forum who give regular good advice (I hope not), but it certainly does provide a very useful option for DIY work.

Hello everyone, dear experts.

Initial situation

For quite some time, I had planned to replace the timing chain. I have now done that, but a problem occurred that I cannot resolve.

The timing chain was replaced, all timing marks were set correctly and checked multiple times. Everything was aligned properly. After that, I fully reassembled the engine: all sensors connected, everything mounted correctly.

Nevertheless, the engine no longer starts.

First diagnosis

After the unsuccessful start attempt, I connected ISTA to check for faults. My first thought was an air-bleeding issue or something similar.

Yes, bleeding is generally required, but according to ISTA, 0 diesel pressure is reaching the fuel rail.

Step-by-step troubleshooting

I then continued checking systematically:

Checked the high-pressure fuel pump
Checked the pressure control valve / IMV
Inspected everything related to the fuel system

After that, I also checked all fuses, because an incident had occurred earlier:

During reassembly, a battery charger was connected. I wanted to tighten an engine mount nut using a long wrench, and the wrench accidentally touched something and caused a short circuit.

The vehicle was switched off at the time, so I initially assumed it could not cause any issues. Nevertheless, to be safe, I checked all fuses — no faults found.

Low-pressure (pre-supply) fuel pump check

Next, I checked whether diesel was being delivered at all.

Normally, during bleeding via ISTA or when switching on the ignition, you can hear the low-pressure fuel pump at the rear of the vehicle.

However, it was completely silent.

So I supplied the low-pressure pump directly with 12 volts — and it ran perfectly.

After that, I checked the hose at the outlet of the fuel filter:
➡️ Absolutely no fuel came out, not even a small flow.

This made it clear:
The low-pressure pump is mechanically fine, but it is not receiving a control signal to activate.

EKPM check

My next suspicion was the EKPM (fuel pump control module). I thought it might have been damaged by the short circuit.

Ordered a new EKPM
Installed it

➡️ No change — still no fuel delivery.

Sensors / Crankshaft position sensor

The crankshaft position sensor (CKP) is connected. I even removed and checked it again.

Installed correctly
Properly secured with the bolt
Installation depth appears correct

So far, everything I can think of has been checked.

Current status & open questions

The only remaining assumption from others is the following:

The DDE is not sending a signal to the EKPM to activate the low-pressure fuel pump.

My questions are:

What could be blocking the DDE?
Why is the signal not being released?
What might I have overlooked?
Has anyone experienced a similar situation after a timing chain replacement?

I have reached a point where everything seems to be checked, but the issue remains unresolved.

Thank you in advance for any helpful ideas.

Build:

Black Sapphire Metallic
Kyalami Orange / Black Full Merino
Carbon Fiber Interior Trim
826M Bicolor Black (19/20)
Carbon Ceramic Brakes (gold)
Carbon Package (exterior)
Carbon Bucket Seats
Shadowline lights

Packages:

Executive Package
Parking Assistance Package
M Driver’s Package
M Drive Professional

MSRP: $114,300

Planned setup at port or after delivery:

- M Performance HAS (leaning conservative/mid drop)
- Spacers (thinking ~10–12mm F / 12–15mm R)
- OEM carbon front lip
- Full PPF + ceramic

Debating / open questions:

1. Stick with 826M 19/20 vs switch to 1000M 20/21 (black or bronze?)

2. For those with HAS—what drop did you land on for daily use with a front lip? Trying to minimize scrapes

3. Any regrets on ceramics for a mostly street-driven car?

Goal:
Clean, OEM+ daily. Not flashy, but still feels special.

Appreciate any thoughts / feedback / things you’d change!

As someone who has owned a few BMWs over the years, is it just me or does it feel like quality has been significantly downhill? I just got a 2026 X7 and while I'm washing the car a lot of parts just feel very plastic-y and loose, more so than in the past. For example the tow hook cover on the back bumper is pretty loose and so are some of the door handles. While this may be 'minor' it's still a $100k car. For reference I've previously had 2015 2series, 2018 x1, 2021 x3 (progression of starting a family) and having hand washed those cars myself the difference seems pretty stark.

On the X7, one issue I had is the door trim is loose, which seems like a part defect. At the dealer we walked around the showroom and every car had the same issue with the trim being loose and coming off from the car. I can't imagine it was an intentional design.

Definitely makes me think twice for future cars, the other question is what brand would be alternative.

Racing stripes that appear when you select Sport Mode. Pretty cool idea…not sure it alone will save their sales problems, but I’ll bet they will soak their customers at $9 grand for the option.

I got into my car at the Trader Joe's parking lot a couple of hours ago. While I was messing with CarPlay(stupid thing lost connection again), I got very excited when I saw a new BMW Neue Klasse pulling into the space directly in front of me. The excitement lasted about 2 seconds until I recognized the Lincoln badge in front.

I drove around and the back of that Lincoln said MKS or MKZ-something. It looked very old.

maybe I need new glasses or stronger coffee... or both? :( I hate to think that BMW copied the design of some old Lincoln? Or worse, hired designers who were fired or retired from Lincoln?
