Returning it to the mechanic by flatbed is the right idea. The noise happens at the same rate as wheel rotation, so probably in the hub or axle shaft, and not the main driveshaft (noise would be more frequent). I lean more towards the new hub since the noise only happens when the tire is on the ground.
