I did the walnut blasting on the intake valves of my N26 when I had it. It had 75k miles. I got the intake open and I was kinda mad that I did all the work. There was almost no buildup. I don't think these engines need catch cans.
At 100,000 on my E93 N54 motor. Did a chemical blasting, drove after like the day it was built...
My oil catch can on that car caught about 3mm of oil level every year (17,000 miles). And from what I found after 5000 miles (mix of water and oil), I'm glad its installed for the long haul.
From what I understand, yes, the N54's needed this service often. I think these newer generations need this service far less frequently.
