The 911 has a unique body defined by the RR format. It looks unlike anything else on the road, which is why they are so recognizable.

The 3-series all have the same basic shape too, the trouble is it's the same shape as every other sedan on the road so it's not as distinctive. It's harder to see the lineage.

The only thing Porsche has been good about is keeping the headlights relatively consistent. The rest of the car has changed to the same degree as a 3 series: bigger dimensions, sleeker rooflines, more muscular, complex surfaces - but still the same basic shape.

If the 911 was a sedan, I guarantee the 2015 would not look as similar to the 1965.
