I like how the M3’s legit dual purpose capability has become so passe. It’s still the best to ever do it, by far.
M3 appreciation will be proportionate to maximization of use. Try this experiment --
Take a mildly modded E9X or F8X during winter, pack up track wheels and a week’s worth of gear. Drop your son at school the next morning and head south. Stop in the Appalachian’s, drive mountain roads for a couple of days. Continue south, hit 2-3 tracks, run with 997 GT3s, Vettes, Mustangs, stripped out low powered race cars and dudes who admire that your family car, caked in road salt, is running with them. Drive home 1400 miles in reasonable comfort, 2X mpg, hand keys over to wife the next morning because she wants “her” car back for the day’s drive.
Then revisit just how much M3’s suck and don’t do anything particularly well.
