Actually its more of making sure you ensure no small particles are on either surface. A larger speck of dust can get lodged and might cause squealing or cause an unecessary scratch on the disk. No specific "cleaner" required.
Also the paste that is spoken of - it's "anti-seize" you can buy at any auto parts store and yes - applied to the opposite side of the brake pad where the caliper makes contact with the BACK of the brake pad.
