I run 18" BBS Xr's (cheap) with Michelin X-Ice winter tires (studless). Definitely not as scary as all-season tires and got me through a couple heavy snows (knock on wood).
I paid ~$2k back a year and half ago and I think they are still offering something similar....
Alternatively, lots of people go with APEX's (they are just a little pricey).
