You do have a valid point, but with these cars there's a fraction of things that can go wrong since there's no motor or transmission. One thing to note is when it comes to damage, I was told that body shops can't fix these cars because Tesla won't sell them parts and they don't want anybody but their own working on these cars so it would be hard to find an Indy shop that would work on these cars.

On the self driving note, it isn't really in development mode anymore. The car already has the capability of being fully autonomous but government regulation prevents that from being released. Tesla just uses the data from everybody using their cars to further improve autonomous mode
