I think the word you are looking for is stereotype.... ?
ster·e·o·type. [ˈsterēəˌtīp]
NOUN
1.a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing:
In social psychology, a stereotype is a thought that can be adopted about specific types of individuals or certain ways of doing things. These thoughts or beliefs may or may not accurately reflect reality. However, this is only a fundamental psychological definition of a stereotype.
it's a fine line.. but I would say it's racist to ASSUME or simply DECLARE ...
" that owner must be ASIAN! "
as far as wondering if the owner does sort of match the stereotype.. that's certainly fair and in bounds... as all stereotypes begin with some truth. It's when one assumes that every person fits a stereotype where one gets into being racist or bigoted.
