Sound is tied to the engine and honestly, with the exception of the S65, M3s have never really sounded all that great (even though I personally like the raspiness of an I6).

You seem to think the E9X M3 was perfect which it was not.
The e46 could be made to sound good but past generations besides the s65 haven't sounded great. But look at the sounds that will come from the twin turbo v8 AMG, Stingray, Porsches so being the worst sounding of the bunch isn't very nice which we all know it's going to be the worst sounding since most of the competition is still using v8s.
