I owned a 335d for a few months. F80's initial power delivery is similar to 335d but the lack of horse power was evident at higher speeds. I think on a day to day basis, driving within the limits of speed, the two cars are similar. But thats where the similarity ends, in my opinion. So if you dont push the limits of car/law/yourself too often, switching to M3 from 335d will only bring some incremental perceptible improvements.

F80 has an M tuned chassis, DCT, M modes, adjustability of the various dynamic settings and the sheer power - while at the same time being a very practical family car. Its a versatile car with a dual personality. 335d matches one of those personalities well, the other one - not so much.

335d is one excellent car. M3 is like two different yet excellent cars in one.
