This mod wouldn't have even crossed my mind. It's not something I'd do but if I was to try and upgrade my '16 to the '17-18 hardware so I can get Apple CarPlay then I'd probably be interested in the costs associated with doing this. I remember how much of a pain the install of my BimmerTech backup system was. The space behind the air vents, wiring harness and mounting it.
Glad I don't have to do that again.
