You are either thinking about the previous generation M3 or have received some incorrect information. I dont think there has been a single instance reported of rod bearing failure on the s55 engine.

And even for the prior gen cars, it was still best to start and drive off immediately (keeping revs and throttle inputs benign of course) rather than simply letting it idle.
