The unrestricted section then began, gave the car the full beans...only to discover the guy later while doing well over 170. Never happened to me before, was so mad at what could have happened that I almost followed the guy and wanted to call the police. One more reason to install dashcams already...front and rear looking.
So driving 170+ is ok, but "racing" is a no-no? Both on public roads, mind you? I really don't understand the thought process of some people...
He lives in Germany.... which has an autobahn?

Driving 170+ in open highway by yourself is perfectly safe on the Autobahn. Racing on the other hand is never safe. People make stupid decisions derived from pride, including weeding through other cars for an edge.
