Turning it by hand you can feel a notch in it. No doubt about it, it's not 100%. So I decided to replace both wheel bearings in addition to the new pads (thank you FCP Euro). For the life of me I can't understand how a judder felt in a rotor will go away when you replace the rotor but then come back over time but I suspect it may be the cause for laying down the uneven deposits. I'll update the thread in the future when I get enough miles to determine whether my version of the mystery is resolved.
