The M3/M4 has just changed. It does really well when the test includes a wide range of parameters including daily driveability. The M3/M4 is a more sophisticated car, catering to a broader audience.
Were it doesn't fair well is in the "Best Driver's Car" test. Where they single out track/aggressive driving and driver involvement. Comparing its level of driver involvement to other great driver's cars. It has lost out a bit there, in return the M3/M4 has gained more liveability.
The sky hasn't fallen, the car has just evolved over time.
