this may be a stupid question so excuse me if this is something I should know, but how does a aftermarket exhaust change the sound being pumped into the cabin? would that sound change (I would assume) or would it still be some sort of mix of real sound and synthetic sound?

I'm pretty sure the sound is actually synthesized from the intake.
