IMO, 20+ years from now will be very different than now or 20+ years ago. The cars we are driving and the roads today aren't so much different than in the 1990's; more efficient and powerful engines, more turbo's, more electronics but generally more or less the same. However, 20+ years from now, in the 2040's, ICE engines will be rare if not gone or prohibited.

There will be self-driving cars on public roads in the 2040's to which cars dated >20 years ago cannot coexist unless retrofitted. But doing such modifications will likely be cost prohibitive to all but exotics like Pagani or Koenigsegg or possibly your less common Ferrari. As for your average BMW 2-Series or 3-Series BMW's with an M badge in 20+ years? Fuggedaboutit.

[PS: Also... at the rate BMW is diluting the M badge, it'll be viewed with a sarcastic and then a in about 20 years or less].
