PSA for new M4/M3 owners regarding BMW Assist

If you plan on subscribing to the SOS BMW assist program:

do not press the SOS button to establish an account until you have confirmed that your dealer has sent the data regarding your car to the assist program people.

If you do press it; you will receive a notice on your screen that it is trying to send the data. and this notice will not go away. period. it locks up your screen and all other functions are inaccessible. It will not time out on its own as BMW assist thought.

a call to BMW genius leads to them calling BMW assist who then says they cannot remotely reset the SOS as the dealer has not sent them the information (takes over 24 hours?)

thus the solution is as follows unless you want to have the dash lit up all night and the screen trying to contact assist program:

you must disconnect the battery negative cable in the trunk right side AND disconnect the 4 AAA battery pack in the DME unit in the trunk as well on the left aspect of the forward area. there is a small access panel and you simply slide that forward and can remove the battery pack.

failure to do this will result in the SOS system trying to continue its call to whereever.

button everything back up and the SOS is reset
