I didn't notice it after driving them in the M Performance School over the weekend. I did notice that rolling down the window a crack or being outside the car allowed one to hear the wonderful exhaust note though. Sitting inside the car is so plush and quiet though. But that's probably the idea when we're talking 5 and 6 series cars. They'd have to take out some of the sound deadening materials to achieve that.
One of the guys with a F10 M5 said his neighbor complained how loud his exhaust was when he started it in the morning. It's not quiet by any means unless you're inside the car obviously.

Active Sound is always on unless you hack and code it out or pull the fuse which disables the whole stereo system.
