its not because they are going back to heritage. BMW makes a lot of I6 engines. it saves cost to make a M4 and a 335i more similar with production. look at the new M engine and look at a 335i engine.
the problem is not a 8 cylinder Vs 6 cylinder thing. its these new small displacement turbo engine. its completely new to M cars!
the M3 v8 is more similar to the E46 I6. than the E46 I6 is to the F80 I6 turbo

To add to this point, the idea that the car's block is shared with the standard 3 series w/ same bore / stroke in this case and on the same assembly line, that's disappointing. Engine is no longer bespoke and built exclusively by the M division (e46 M engine, e92 M engine).
But I have to say impressed with the other tech additions and weight reduction.
