My vote would be for closed but like you said it'd be more expensive, so it's a bit of a financial decision. When I had my 135i transported from Florida to California, the car arrived in a very dirty condition (thick black soot) and it had picked up some new paint chips. That really annoyed me and I wish I had covered it or protected it somehow.
