Had my car in for something else last week and brought this issue up to the service advisor. BMW ended up replacing it under warranty. I did mention this forum thread, not sure if that swayed them. Might also be the service advisor. When I first brought it in just for that trim piece, the service advisor said they can only do a 'good faith' repair and that I would have to pay half. Now, with a different advisor, it get taken care of completely free of charge. I don't know if this will help anyone, but I figured I'd just post the update, just in case.
