Not sure about 1/3 for comparable performance? The mfg range for the Turbo S is 192 miles. Porsche may have been conservative on range going by this article where independent testing apparently revealed 290 mile range for the Turbo S.

Shouldn't the lower powered 4S and base models have better range?

Porsche is also conservative in their performance numbers by up to 1/2 second 0-60. That would place the Turbo S around 2.1, the Turbo mid 2s, and 4S low 3s to 60mph.

Low to mid 3 seconds to 60 is good enough for a family sedan and I would gladly pay more for the higher quality, better looking vehicle with a much nicer interior.
