Either works. It's easier to tap into the wiring behind the mirror clamshell since they are not wrapped up in tape and route back underneath the interior light housing.

Double-check your connections with a digital multimeter, also make sure the spade connector blade inserts into the slot (and doesn't push) aside when inserting into the scotchlock, not making contact.
