Is this one of those warnings that I need to go to a dealer or independent?

I've had that happened to me too. It was summer time and I was pushing the car pretty hard on the track. The car went in limp mode and I pulled over to the side. I turned it on and off and the Drivetrain Malfunction light went away. But 20 seconds prior to that the "High Temperature Transmission" light also came on. Once the car cooled off, I continued tracking and the car was fine. Strange that yours stayed on, I'd get it check.
