One of the unique things about the F80 (and previous iterations of the 4 door M3) is the unique blend of coupe headlights with sedan body - the only way to get that mix was to get an M (the gran coupe released for the F generation being an exception).

With the
rumors of a M4 Gran Coupe for the next generation, I think they'll likely have to visually differentiate M3 and M4 Gran Coupe.
