I finally got around to taking this apart - there are just two trim clips at the end near the rear window.
Inside you can see the two plastic clips which secure the headliner to the roof... turns out that it was these which were rattling and squeaking. I put a bit of lubricant on the clips and then replaced the stoplight cover firmly.
Rattles all gone!
