For me, both studs and lugs are a wear item on a car that is tracked regularly. I don’t feel studs are any “safer” than lugs. Studs in my view is mostly a convenience item that make installing wheels an easier feat. The drawback is that a sheared stud can be a real pain to remove, whereas a sheared lug is usually really easy to remove (I’ve sheared 3 in my 26 years of tracking). I personally don’t feel the need for studs and have always used lugs.
