Check this post for details on replacing the tail lights on an F83:

Basically you're just following the existing wiring loom on the passenger side from the outside tails to the inside (make sure to leave slack where the existing wiring does). You then repeat the process on the driver's side using the passenger side run as a guide. I ran the wiring into the trunk through one of the grommit holes behind the tail lights (there's only one hole that goes all the way through).
Make sure to *not* remove any of the tabs from the lights (that's only required for the coupe). I also had to splice in more wire to make them long enough to follow the existing wiring all the way up to the inside lights for a completely clean install.
