Think the DCT in the X1 is like the basic... not really fast, regular tranny. Kind of like what Hyundai/Kia uses.

Though, yeah it is strange. I'm tempted to go try it to see how it feels.

This! It’s not the same DCT that the ///M cars receive(d).

I still find it odd they chose a DCT for it, somehow it must be cheaper than other options.

All UKL transverse-mounted powertrains in BMW and Mini have a Magna (formerly Getrag) 7-speed gearbox.

They used to have an 8-speed Aisin torque converter, which is sold to Stellantis, Volvo, VW, the Chinese and whatnot, but BMW AG switched to the Magna DCT mid-cycle of the previous-gen X1 and X2s as well as the Minis, if I recall.

Reason being:
1. Hybridisation - nothing suitable from Aisin
2. Weight - minus 20 kg for the non-hybrid version
3. Reliability - more robust than Aisin

The various ZF 8HP Lego sets allow them to share components from one car to another and it was also required for the switchable M xDrive AWD system.

VW also has DCTs in their cheapest one-litre cars, it's not got much to do with speed or performance.

It’s a wet clutch isn’t it?

These hohum DCTs I haven’t really driven.
