F80 has to sound better than....
The E90 M3. stock that is. My F80 is in and need to turn in the E90. Put the stock exhaust back on. Nothing remotely remarkable. Really forgot how weak it sounded stock. And it's easy to make a v8 sound good.
Give the aftermarket a little time....someone will figure it out. |

I took the akra evo off the e92. Drive off without the exhaust after having it on for 3 years and the sound was so muted I though I was driving a Lexus. I floored it and noticed a decrease I'm power and engine sound I could barely hear. Tooling around the parking lot in an f80 was just impressive by a mile.

I had the same experience. Took the Akra off and it sounded like a kitten. Whereas people hear my F80 M3 and instantly assume I already went aftermarket.
I drove to the top of a parking garage today past empty rows because I didn't want to turn the car off. I'm not saying it's a flat plane Ferrari, but genuinely been pleased with the stock note.

Nothing at all wrong with the sound... louder that the E9X in sport mode with a different tone. I find the exhaust very tinny and raspy at first but once the car heats up it is very deep.

I'd agree that the exhaust outside the E9x isn't as good as the sound inside, which is where I hear it most anyway so that's convenient!
Nonetheless, to me the F8x sounds like a noisy 370z. Not like a special, $75k+ car. |

Too much is made of combustion noise honestly. Or it just becomes a point of argument to one's bias'....good thing that doesn't happen among the gentlefolk of this forum and those on E90. My RS made my E90 sound entirely pedestrian, special is very relative otherwise we'd drive Chargers. Even with a full Akra, unless you were at 6K+ my E90 sounded just okay, and at 7K driving down the street, your just another attention seeking douche. The E80 on the other hand makes itself known even at parking lot speeds. The E90 sounded great with DCT at the track, but then the car was just too heavy for me to enjoy. Waiting for the chassis to take a set was ponderous, brakes needed work, wanted to push in slow corner, great engine let down by a so-so chassis. The new car is a much more fulfilling balance for me. The engine, even with my hesitation being FI, I can describe in one word...FUN, just laugh out loud fun. However, the chassis is honestly the thing worth talking about.

In the case of the e92 M3, I don't want to hear the exhaust mask that induction sound !

I agree. The stock sound of the E9X left me un-impressed. After 7 years of S54 excitment in my E46, I found my E9X rather boring in the sound department. Until I installed an MPE, K&N filter and BPM tune that is. The S65 then became pure bliss .
For now, the S55 simply does not match it. My M4 makes interesting sounds; but it is more loud and obnoxious rather than sounding highly tuned and refined as the S65. |

the F80 is WORLDS better performance car. the E9x guys understand this, they dont go trolling around saying the E92 is a better performance car. BUT its a simple fact the N/A V8 was a more vocal engine. IMO you can say the F80 is better in every single way, but it will not win in the sound department. Even guys who MADE the S55 will agree. this is why they play noise in the cars speaker. turbo engines have always suffered from lack of noise. same thing with the new Ferraris the old N/A V8 and V12 will always sound better than the new turbo ones. its not even up for a debate really. |

Loud exhaust on the E90 is pointless IMO and ruins the experience for me personally. It's really about induction noise and the E90 is one of the best out there (and I have driven both a Lambo and a Ferrari). You have the engine howl and valve noise come right through the intake vent on top of the hood. As the engine is in the front you can hear so much of the engine working as the car whooshes through the air. Granted you have to have the windows down for this. Put a CSL style CF intake/plenum and the intake sound I would say is better than a Ferrari, kid you not.
Turner Motorsports has said that the LR E92 M3, with the MPE was the best sounding BMW ever built. This is coming from real race drivers who have seen (or heard) it all. Also agree with one of posters above about Audi RS4 sounding incredible..it's really an awesome sound especially from outside the car. |

Kinda sorry I started this thread.
I really do like them all. Even better that they are different - makes life interesting. Flat 6, 90 degree v-twin, v8, inline 6, inline 4, even....rotary. Sound torque, torque curve, response......then again I'm the guy that orders whatever the special of the day is without even asking the waitress what it is. Now for pure v8 sound I would vote for my Dinan E39 M5.....long gone but the rumble is still discussed by neighbors. |

This is one of those situations where everyone complains about the sound, drives their F80 for a year and then goes to drive an E92 and pretty much says... "never again" even w the sound. I can nearly guarantee it... down low tq is down low tq and once you've experienced it; nothing compares.

.......it certainly goes and corners like a $75k car though. I used to get hot sweats in my E90 M3 whenever I came across a tuned hot hatchback -not any more

Ok now that I got my F80 I'll just stir things up.
To me, in my opinion, the only opinion that matters to me.....stock F80 sounds better than stock E90. I had to put an exhaust on E90, don't think I have to on F80. and don't think I will. I'll move on to other foolish pursuits. Now interestingly, overall not sure I like the F80 as much. Might have something to do with looks. Not sure yet, need to give it some time. The kids think the butt warmers in back seat is a plus so now it's at least on par with mom's X5. |
