Cool Comfort Access Fail-Safe Feature

If per chance you become temporarily absent minded, you might try to lock your key fob in the trunk.

Quickly...I unknowingly left my key fob in my work bag and tried to close the trunk. It actually closed but then beeped twice and reopened automatically. At first I was WTF but then realized how ingenious BMW was with this design to protect the driver.

might be worth testing a few scenarios. Maybe is based on proximity of the sensor? I don't think the sensor detects the fob in the truck per se, just really close so doesn't lock. I'm just guessing. Worth doing a few tests, as I too have managed to lock myself out before. So, this feature would be very useful indeed. Especially with comfort access, you're liable to leave the fob anyplace i.e. briefcase in the back seat comes to mind.

It detects it inside the vehicle somehow. I tried to have my friend leaves my keys in the trunk at the airport so I could unlock via the remote app but the car wasn't having it.
That was back when u could unlock with the app.

With comfort access only you could do this, if you leave the key inside the car it will not lock obviously and truck would reopen it self.

Just a warning ... I did this once and it didn't reopen the vehicle. Dealer had to smash open a taillight to get it (cheapest part to damage).

Same thing happened as well with the car running and I locked the keys in there. Both times I had Comfort Access and BMW Assist and neither feature helped me!

Thanks to the moderator for adjusting the thread title.

I learn something new about this vehicle every day. This feature with comfort access is a pleasant surprise.

Very cool feature but not a big deal beeping to alert you, my wife's KIA does the same. The real neat trick here is reopening the trunk, that is the sh*t!

If it had happened at home it wouldn't have been an issue.

Unfortunately both incidents occured 50+ kms from my home where the spare key was.

Managed to Lock BOTH sets of key fobs in my X6M TWICE. (With Comfort Access)

Had to call BMW Assist on both occasions to send an unlock over the air.

Good thing I wasn't in an underground garage or I'ld have to have the car "dragged outside"...

If I'm understanding this correctly and you have comfort access and the car thinks you left the key in there it will automatically open the trunk. Is this correct. The reason I'm responding is because I went out to my car in the garage twice now to find the trunk open. The first time I just figured I left trunk open, the second time I thought I might have accidentally pushed the button on the key fob. If there was a third time I was going to have the car go through an exorcism. Is it likely that since it's such close proximity to the key in the house that the M thought it was still in the car. A bad thing about this is that it was cold out when it happened the first time and the trunk light was left on when it opened and I just by chance went out to the garage. My battery surely would have died if I didn't go out. Both times key was not left in the car.

RFID. That's all. not some magic or anything.

As to how cool BMW is for thinking this, well....every other car manufacturer has the same or similar functions on some of their cars. I love my M4, but that doesn't mean I worship BMW.

That seems crazy, can't BMWNA just remote unlock the car if you give them your vin and call the number on the sticker on the windshield? I always thought that was the whole point of that sticker.

It can certainly be done, I've gone through it myself with my E93 M3 and it worked no problem.

However, as noted by another poster above, you do have to be in a location where you can receive the unlock signal. Not sure if that is the issue with the guy you responded to or what, but the bottom line is that it is not a guaranteed solution.

The first vehicle didn't have that feature on it, so I didn't bother trying.

But the second time it happened (on a different BMW), I did have the BMW Assist feature. They tried "unlocking" the doors, but nothing would happen. I was under an enclosed roof, so perhaps it was blocking the signal somehow?
