Interestingly, it wasn't the crank hub that let go. The #5 cylinder wall developed a hairline crack and was letting coolant into the combustion chamber.

Crank hub fix wouldn’t do anything for this.
Also, I doubt you are using your S55 to the same level that they are. I would not look much into the failure of a block that is extensively used on a racetrack with pretty extreme duty cycles. |

So what is the repair? New motor? Core exchange? Cost? Specialty repair from what I can tell you are saying....back to BMW to fix?

they said in the video that they were dropping in a new motor and salvaging what they can from the old motor to use as spare parts and keychains lol

Strange place the motor let go , #5 cylinder wall has a hairline crack in it? What could have caused it ?
Does anyone know of similar cases with other S55's ? |

That's why race teams occasionally rebuild their engines I guess

This is not common on a closed deck engine like the S55. The whole purpose for a closed deck block is to strengthen the walls.

35k on a motor running at full rpm 70% of the time seems pretty good.

This is their 3rd S55 motor. They've averaged about 35,000 kilometers (21,748 miles).
They've only replaced the motors with used power plants; not new. This was not a crank hub issue. They hairline cracked the block. The M6 GT3 cars also average 30,000 - 35,000 kilometers on their race driven motors. Most of us are not running our cars like they do. |

The old saying used to be 100kms on the race track is a 1000kms on the road, they have done 35,000kms on the ring, so possibly 1500+ laps at 500+hp. I reckon that is pretty damn impressive for a factory engine.

35000km of nearly all full speed Nordshleife miles. Remember this car is mostly driven flat-out by professionals and runs 500-550hp tunes. In an engine that wasn't brand new to begin with.
You are NOT putting anywhere near the same level of stress on your engine with the occasional trackday and canyon blast I wonder if it would be more economical for them to do a rebuild at 25000km or so rather than keep buying new engines. Not sure if a rebuild helps when it's the block cracking though? |

the crack looks to be a very minor issue from numerous high heat cycles. if anyone paid attention, the owner mentioned that they could have continued to drive on the engine without major issues but they decided to pull it for a tear down to be extra safe.
the physical cylinder wall itself is 100% ok. it's only the LDS coating that developed a hairline crack which has minimal impact on the block's structural integrity. the engine can be salvaged by an experienced machine shop using cylinder sleeves in place of the LDS coating. |
