Odd Engine Temp Warning??

Hey guys, I was driving around today, actually doing a small photoshoot at different areas around campus when I got a very odd engine temp warning.

It's a cool 48 degree (F) day, no humidity, and I'm driving along in D mode (setting 1 for shifting) with throttle response in sport. But, I'm driving slow, 25 mph roads around campus barely getting up to 2500rpm in any gear. Engine temp is at its normal place when car is up to temperature around the notch one below 250.

Suddenly, the fans start acting up, the engine temp gauge goes all the way down to the lowest notch and I get a warning saying to drive moderately because my engine is too hot. (picture below).

I pulled over, shut the car off and opened up the hood; nothing in the engine bay was anywhere near hot or overheating... and when I turned the car on, the warning went away, but the temp gauge did go back up.

Any ideas? Simple glitch?

Driving in sport mode does make the engine run hotter. You have to go a bit faster than 25mph to get the engine fed with lots of air.

I noticed my fan kicked on when I got home a few times (I always drive in Sport or Sport+), even during the winter. My hypothesis is to drive in efficient mode when I get into my neighborhood (25mph limit). Since then, my fan hasn't kicked on even on warmer days with spirited driving.

Only go into sport mode if you're going faster than 40mph I guess.

Sport+ runs the coolest. Sport and efficient runs slightly warmer.

Nevertheless this sounds more like an electrical or sensor issue. Your temp gauge is at the bottom while simultaneously it's telling you your engine is overheating? Need to have it looked at for sure.

I'm very doubtful the engine was truly overheating assuming all cooling systems were operational. Keep us posted.

The warning says nothing about the temp being too hot. Just says there is a problem. Yep, dealer time.

I haven't had the warning since. And it did correct itself after I shut the car off the first time. Do you still think a dealer trip is necessary? It's my last week of undergrad coming up and that means crunch time before reading period/finals so I won't have much time to drive 30 mins out and back to my dealer until next week.

Thanks!
