2014 Detroit Auto Show
I'm thinking about going to the Detroit Auto Show in January so I can see the new M3/M4 in person. I've never been to a major auto show before. Does anyone know if the M3 and M4 will be in a roped off area, or will we be allowed to get up close and sit inside?
I'm trying to determine if it is worth it for me to travel from Austin, TX to attend. Thanks!

Funny you say this because I just booked my flights and hotel about an hour ago! Detroit finally gave me a reason to visit lol.

most likely wont be able to sit in any of the cars during public days.
If you attend the pre show events then I would say you would have a high chance of getting a more personal experience

They will definitely be roped off since they will be pre-production cars that don't come off the normal line like your typical car that you can sit in at an auto show.
As mentioned above, it is possible attendance of a preview event might get you better access. I was at the charity preview the year the Z4 M Roadster debuted in Detroit (2006 I think) and was able to touch the car but I don't think they allowed entry. By comparison, I believe the car was completely roped off during the public show days but I would not swear to it. |

I expect by the time the LA show opens to the public that the X4 Concept and i8 will be behind glass barriers. In Tokyo the M4 Concept is now behind barriers.

When it shows in Detroit you will likely be allowed to have a seat. Here are pictures from the 2008 E92M3 launch. That's my ugly mug falling in love with the car. I will say that the M5/6 also were open to the public when they were showing production cars at NAIAS. I would assume you can get into the car. If you can either go black tie, during the work hours during the week, or figure a way into a press event. During peak hours it gets a little unruly with riff-raff.

I think I'd have a hard time justifying a flight there even if they were going to let me drive it. Sitting in it ain't going to cut it. You can get 90% of that experience sitting in a 435i or an M5.
I saw the M4 prototype with the blacked out windows at Laguna Seca. It was cool and all, but not worth traveling to see. The auto show models always look a little different than the final US spec.

Nice pics richardg - I was at the Industry Preview in 2008 and pulled the car apart taking pics. I think they are still on M3Post somewhere.
But, remember, that was not the world premier, just the US premier. This is the world premier we are talking about and these will be pre-production cars. I don't think they're gonna be accessible to the public. I hope I am wrong though. |

I'll be going! I've been switching back and forth for the last 10 or so years, Chicago one year, Detroit the next. Luckily it's Detroit this year!

I will be there. Not just for the M3/M4 but also to see other cars. There will be a lot of cars debuting at that time. I have tons of frequent flyer miles and hotels points that the trip will cost me nothing. Might as well go and have some fun and enjoy some cars.

I want to go to see it. I hope you can at least see a good shot of the interior, which is the most secretive part of this reveal so far.

I was at my dealer yesterday putting in my deposit to be the first on their list for the M3 and I almost commited to buying their launch M3. It had everything I wanted except they added the sunroof, the CF roof is the way to go on this car! |

i have attended the show every year for the past 8 years. never seen BMW roping off any of their cars. Though sometimes they lock these cars, but we sat in M6 last year. Can't remember if we sat in E92 M3 in 2008. Bring your car key with you if you fly as that will allow you access to BMW private lounge with drinks and snacks. That place is a zoo, and a break in a nice lounge will come in handy

What I do know is that pre-production cars, no matter the manufacturer or the auto show, are almost always kept under tight wraps. If it's not the final product; you really don't want potential customers pouring over every inch and scrutinizing. By the way "roped off" is just a colloquial term, it's a figure of speech for a car that isn't accessible to the public. |

thanks for the language lesson, but at the show some companies like Ferrari and Bentley actually rope off their cars, and by the time Jan comes, M3/M4 will be production cars so the company will try to show case them to the public. This year we sat in E63 AMG despite the fact it was not released into US market till fall of the year
