0-1000m in 21.9 seconds
So that was the official time in their release.
What does that typically translate to 0-160mph? Let's assume the 0-60mph is 3.5 sec --0.4sec better than BMW's quote of 3.9 because the last M3 was quoted at 4.5 sec with the DCT but most publications got around 4.1sec. Here's a list I googled quickly from ferrarichat and another forum. No idea how accurate the numbers are or the source: 15. Porsche Carrera GT: 20.4sec@264km/h(165mph) 16. Based on BMWs press release of the F10 M5, that car also does 1000m in 21.9 sec shown below.
Is it really the case that this 425hp M4 is going to get through the quarter mile as fast as the 560hp M5? The weight difference doesn't account for the difference in power. So we're expecting a 0-100mph around 8.0-8.5 seconds? If so, that is STUPID fast. lol This car is monster. I wouldn't be surprised if it's faster than the ESS 535 supercharged M3s. Anyone have numbers for the 535/565/600/625 kits? BMW ConnectedDrive Comfort Optional: BMW Assist incl. If that number is truly the case, I agree that will be a very fun, fast car to drive. Its more shocking to think that it only takes 1000 meters to get to 160+ mph. Thats a good on ramp!! LOL

I don't know, was it official from BMW? I ran a CarTest simulation to look at this and got exactly 21.9 seconds for the M4. I got just a hair better for the F10 M5 at 21.6. I have made many assumptions here worth noting. Unfortunately, you can quite read that level of accuracy from this screen grab, but I'm sure I read the graphs correctly with zoomed in.
M5 shown in turquiose M4 shown in purple 1. The M5 is underrated by 20 hp. Such a figure gives simulation result that match actual tests very well. 2. Although the actual number is probably going to be more like 15-20 hp, this particular simulation for the M4 (giving the 21.9 second figure) assumed a 30 hp underrating by BMW. 3. Both of these include M-DCT.

Track testing may get lower times than those times. Some M5 owners will not be happy.

Thanks "encyclopedia" South! This is a phenomenal time!
I'm very curious - are you personally as excited about the new M3/4 as the prior generation? The official 21.9 second time quoted by BMW is downright amazing. That offers further evidence to me that the S55 is in fact underrated closer to 25-35 hp rather than 15-25. The other interesting point is that I believe the 21.9 seconds is much closer to an absolutely best possible run whereas we know on most other performance metrics BMW is extremely conservative. I bet that particular run had a 0-60 closer to 3.6 than to 3.9...

I am better the M3/4 are underrated by 30-40 hp to be getting close to what the 911/Vette are though I know track times it will be well off their pace. At the same time, lets see what it actually runs rather than these "in a perfect world" scenario, because we know those never exist and all that does matter is what it actually does when it does it. I wonder how the new longer gearing will affect the car. |

Not sure what you are asking here? BMW has released the gear ratios and final drive numbers. My simulations as well as all official numbers reported by BMW include this gearing.

Yep, I'm pretty much just as excited about the new M3/4 as the E9x M3. Sure, the engine might not be as special as the S65 was, but the overall package sounds VERY promising to me. Best regards, south

Yea, the 455hp figure sounds about right. Assuming the M5 has 580hp, and the M4 has 455hp thats ~7.4 lbs/hp, and ~7.6lbs/hp respectively. That would most likely make them very close with a 21.9sec to 1000m time. The M4 has a slight headstart due to better traction in the first two gears, the M5 starts pulling just a slightly bit harder once in 3rd onward. Sounds like we're going to see an 8.2-8.4 sec 0-100mph time. Amazing for a car that has "425hp". Last edited by BigMacSmallFries; 12-23-2013 at 09:36 PM.. |
