F80 M3 / F82 M4 Break-In, Engine Oil, Launch Control Tidbits from Owners Manual
BIMMERPOST NEWS F80/F82 M3/M4 Break-In, Oil, Launch Control Tidbits from Owners Manual We got a hold of the operating manual of the F80 M3 and found some interesting tidbits we would like to share. Break-In Period As with any other current or late M model, break-in period is 2,000 km or 1,200 miles. During that time, maximum engine speed should not exceed 5,500 RPM, maximum speed is 170 kph (105 mph). Also, full-throttle and kickdown shall be avoided up until 1,200 miles. Between 2,000 and 5,000 km (1,200 and 3,100 miles), engine RPM can be slowly increased but speed should not exceed 220 kph (137 mph) for a longer period of time. Recommended Oil Unlike the E9x M3, BMW recommends 0W-30 oil. The times of mandatory 10W-60 oil apparently seem to be over. Engine Warmup / Shift Lights The good ole engine warmup and shift lights in the tachometer are back (a la E46 M3). When the engine is cold, the permitted rev range is limited, as usual. While the E9x M3 did this via some analogue disc moving into and out of the permitted rev range, the F80 M3 and F82 M4 has led lights for this job. These LED lights are also used for shift lights, regardless of whether there is HUD or not. Unfortunately, I do not know yet whether there will be shift lights for the manual transmission. Launch Control simplified Lastly about another DCT feature: BMW has simplified the launch control procedure. While it was a fairly complicated procedure with previous M cars, with the F80 M3 and F82 M4 engaging Launch Control is as easy as it gets: Turn off DSC, switch to S3, hold the brake, apply full throttle and let go of the brake. I've added some more photos and text copied from the German operating manual, so let me know if there's anything in particular you guys want to know. |

The easier launch control would give me pause buying a "pre-owned" one, but its nice to see the unicorn blood oil requirement is gone.
I am starting to really want the new M3. I cant wait for all the reviews to roll in. |

Thanks for sharing!
Is this part talking about shifting into neutral by pulling both paddles? (coveted feature on 911 GT3's) See this article for a discussion of "Paddle Neutral" in GT3's. 2014 911 GT3 Review |

Do you have to switch the gear shift into manual mode in order to use the paddles or will they automatically switch into manual mode upon shifting the paddle the first time?

Please keep in mind, though, that this is for Germany / ECE markets, US default settings may be different. Best regards, south

Doing break-in is going to be soooooo much less painful than in the E9X. With the F8X you can use full power from 0 miles.
"As with any other current or late M model, break-in period is 2,000 km or 1,200 miles. During that time, maximum engine speed should not exceed 5,500 RPM" Refresh of power data: 425 HP from 5500-7300 RPM 406 LB-FT torque from 1850-5500 RPM |

too bad they didn't add the feature like the PDK has on the 991 gt3 where if you pull both paddles it will disengage the clutchs

Thanks South, was very interested about the break in. Never mentioned to avoid full throttle it seems. I'm a strong believer in aggressive break-ins.
Here's to hoping the shift lights are present on the 6spd as well (not out of need but out of "cool" factor for us manual guys) |
