S55 Blown Engine Failure *****UPDATE FROM BMWNA 9/28/15 *****
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Today, on this slightly hot California day, I write with good news. ORIGINAL POST I have 15k miles on my engine, my car was delivered in December and shipped to California in February. I drove the car for about a month and a half when this happened: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...errerid=183543 After that, the car was repaired and had 8k healthy miles of uninterrupted fun and ownership. I just took the car on a road trip to Colorado, CA, and Yellowstone. I haven't had time to post about it but will soon. This sort of interrupted that... This Monday there was a problem with my car and long story short there is a hole in the block somewhere. The engine died at around 50-70mph after having just accelerated from about 25-30, and now slowing for a corner at about 40. The car died, there was apparently a massive backfire (so I am told from some one behind me) and I pulled over. I never started the car after it shut itself off, let me first say that. The car was towed into a nearby garage, with the fault code reading "Low coolant level. Possible engine damage. Scalding Hazard." We put coolant in the car, and when it took the entire gallon of coolant, we knew something was wrong. Checking under the car revealed no leaks so we suspected an internal leak. We drained the oil to see if that's where the coolant was going (lowest point, oil floats to the top of coolant) and sure enough the entire gallon of coolant was there. We suspected blown head gasket and had the car towed to a BMW dealership. I got a call yesterday saying that there was catastrophic engine failure and there is a hole in the block somewhere. As fast as you pour coolant into the coolant box, it's coming out equally fast from the oil drain. This leads them to believe there is a hole in the block somewhere, in either cylinder 4 or 6. He said the spark plug on cyl. 4 is seized so they suspect that one. I am completely stock, and BMW is saying (after the Data Dump they did) that the car was over revved at 7722 rpm at 152 mph. I had the car in Sport throttle setting, not Sport+. For those F8X savvy owners out there, or 6MT owners, you'll know that in Sport the car won't rev match if the selected gear will result in an over rev of the engine on the downshift. It will leave the rpms at 700 and make you wind the engine to meet the gear by grinding your clutch basically, but in that time your speed will have dropped and hopefully you will be within the rpms of that selected gear. Now, I never did that. I'm not stupid. The point that I'm making is that with Sport throttle setting, it is damn near impossible to over rev the engine unless you straight clutch dump at high speed to a lower gear. WHICH I DID NOT DO. Nor did I downshift to a gear that the car did not auto-rev match itself. I need some person on my side to fight BMW with this. What sort of resources and right do I have as an owner. Please help guys. I can't pay for a 30k new engine. Last edited by yosman8; 09-28-2015 at 05:37 PM.. |

normal I'm pretty sure. also, temp was around 235°F. Just below the middle of the gauge. A little higher than normal under hard driving, but still well below danger temps of 300...

What was your speed when this happened?
Who did you go to for the info?

Would it matter what speed this happened? Our cars should be able to handle this type of speed, but if your were running 152 at max rpm for 5min then that might be an issue which i doubt you did.
I just fight and complaint about it.

I was doing about 60-70, was slowing for a corner, no power. Go to shift and rpms continue to drop and fall to 0 while clutch is depressed. I had just gone from about 25mpg out of a corner to about 65mph, slowed for the corner and this happened. Also, the previous corner was similarly 20mph to 70mph.

Hell can the driving school back you up on this too? Have you contacted your insurance company to see what they can do? (even though they might be a douche and not do jack.)

Ya just call your insurance company and put in a claim. Then go to the dealership and show the footage of what you were doing when the engine blew.

Link to his thread or profile?? Also please clarify "moneyshift". I'm assuming you mean the little throttle blip in neutral as you upshift.

Usually only happens in a car with a manual transmission- A money shift is an accidental, far too aggressive down-shift, in which the engine performs the biggest red-line you've ever seen. It's referred to as a money shift, because it usually results in money coming out of your pocket for a new head, pistons etc. Can't find the thread |
