I was mostly not serious about poking fun about the test mule's appearance, but I do have a serious gripe about all this.
Starting with the stupid decision to take their most iconic car with a 30+ year pedigree and create a M3 and an M4, we now have such dilution of trim versions of the same damn model that nothing means anything anymore. M3 and M4 Civic x2 and ZCP x2 LCI 30 Jahre CS x2 GTS How about just getting it right the first time FFS If this is going to be a new F82 trim, then I cant imagine this being anything more than lipstick on a pig. There's just nowhere for it to go. |

My guess: a test mule for a new enhanced aero package for the M4 GT4.

If that's indeed an "improved" version of the GTS, it makes me wonder, why?
Theres so much you can do with a chassis that starts life as a 420d. Why bother waste time and money on this thing still? Theres already no where to go in this. Just marketing trying to squeeze as much money as they can out of thin air. If they want so bad to make a true sports car that has any relevance whatsoever, they know they need to do a dedicated project from the ground up for this to happen and be competitive at all in this segment/ price bracket. |

Some more pics. I think they are testing some updated aero parts for the M4 GT4. Typically they will do updates throughout the lifecycle of the race car.

Seeing those parts on the car and resulting ground clearance, no way it could be a CSL. The CSL is a trackable street car, not a pure track car like the GT4.
Would be good add one to the GTS for track days, though, providing they give additional downforce and wider stance. |

It is not the first time we see this type of testing by BMW. The aero kit in the OP looks like an evolution of the one seen in 2016: https://www.autoevolution.com/news/b...ks-110545.html

Or could be this? Certified this year but hasn't made an appearance yet.

Man, people are brutal here. Do so few people really realize what it means to be a test mule? This is a car they're using to experiment with a bunch of different aero bits (likely more stuff under the skin too). Could be for this car, could be the next generation. It doesn't have to look good, have smooth flowing body lines, fit properly, or not be riveted on. It just needs to perform its function as that what they're testing.
This is indeed at BMW's Nurburgring test center, as I was there last Tuesday and saw it in that parking lot pictured in the OP (along with the new Z4, 3 Series, 8 Series, and a couple of M4 CSs). |

It's most likely a BMW prototype for something. There is nobody stupid enough to make custom front fenders and paint them in matte finish without completing the car except the OEM. They will need to do a much better job with vents over the front wheels, too, but the concept is great. It's hard to tell from these pictures if anything meaningful is under the hood/suspension, but if they don't seriously fix MDM and track level traction control nannies, this thing is going to bomb. Needs more rear tire, too, but that's an easy fix. Oh, and the matte paint on a track car is not ideal - chips are nearly impossible to touch up on this car. (How about a nice 600hp twin turbo 4.4L V8, 285mm front/325mm rear tires, and track mode MDM, and a great upgrade program from our current cars at MSRP??) I know Pat would buy one immediately!

In my experience in order to fully make the 275 fronts wear well, you need over 3 degrees of camber, probably around 3.5. That creates all sorts of compromises for a street car, at least for my annual usage pattern. Fact is that any high performance front engine RWD car with serious track performance can mount a 305 at the front, after all that’s where most of the weight is. GT350, ZL1 can do this. And so could an M3/4 with just minimal rework to the front fenders and geometry. Put the super wide track wheels for track work, then switch back to the 265’s for daily driving. All I’m asking is for bmw to allow for this possibility in their next design.
