NBT Evo ID5/ID6 Navigation

So I'm wondering... is it possible to remove the head unit from a wrecked 2017-18 M4 and swap it out with mine so that I can get I drive and the new map version? Would all the plugs be the same?

Plugs would be the same but you need to code unit to your car and FSC codes.
Let me know if you need them.

That sounds like it would be more of a pain then just paying Bimmer world to install a new one

Ordered the retrofit kit from steve@codemybimmer and did the install a few weeks back. It was very straightforward for anyone with a basic level of DIY capability and patience.

Do you have a NBT or NBT EVO currently installed as you give no info.

Appears you have an early model NBT EVO unit and an ATM unit so you would not lose your SOS communications and connected drive.

However, as your VIN is linked to the early model units, you will be unable to use all the benefits of a newer HU.

Ok so I know I can't get apple car play on it.. so my option of taking one out of a wrecked 17 m4 will that still work?

I have video in motion and my sat radio I don't wannt to lose. so apple car play and the updated maps. But the most recent map has been pushed through by bmw that I can get. What else is there that can be updated or added?

Maps can be updated in other ways. Much cheaper than changing the HU out. So it's really down to CarPlay.

And I would not spend the money to retrofit anything but the latest NBT EVO Hardware which is version 4.1 of iDrive 6.

However, you will not be able to use a number of the advanced Connected Drive features that are available for later vehicles as your car's VIN/provisions are still tied to that and the BMW MasterDatabase would show the old HU's abilities.

Ok so how do I get car play without any weird adapters in the console. Update the new maps and update to newest version for what I have

The easiest is to sign into your BMW Connected Drive account and purchase the latest Navigation maps which can be sent OTA to your car. There are other options as well.

As for CarPlay, depending on the HW level in your car, you might have access to iDrive 6 lite with CarPlay - or not. Regardless, iDrive 6 lite has issues with limited memory.

Again, is Car Play alone worth that much to you?

Why are you saying that iDrive 6 lite has issues with memory?
Both HW 3.1 and HW 4.1 has 4GB memory of RAM, and there are NO issues with limited memory. iDrive 5/6 units has same amount of RAM memory.
Maps update could be done by simple using FSC code for your VIN.

I paid for the map updates through bmw. What I like is apple car play and I really like the new layout on the 2017-18 I drive that's why I want to update

The OP actually won't lose any pre-existing functionality if he was to upgrade to ID6 given the model year and factory options according to the VIN. OTA Map updates will still work provided that the vehicle still subscribed and same goes for RTTI, BMW Online services etc.

We do get a lot of folks who will have us remotely setup and flash the HU in their vehicle and this is something we can help you with if you source your own hardware.

90% of the used units out there don't have the necessary firmware to have fullscreen apple carplay enabled and will need an update.

If you're coming from a 2016 model, those will still work since the telematic equipment between ID4 NBT EVO and ID5/ID6 are similar.

This is a very interesting question. You sure on that as the ATM is based on VIN and the 2016 vehicles did not have the capability to transmit this info via ATM. It was only available with smartphone connected.

Agree that ATM COULD pass it if it was supplied through iDrive, but will BMW Connected Drive services pass the info from a 2016 car that is not supposed to be supplying it constantly via ATM?
