I’ll let you know as I just went 18x10 & 18x11 with 275/35 & 305/35 Toyo RR. Picking up car from cage builder this week with first track event next weekend. Coming from 265 & 285 RE71s.
My E36 friends say they went from 1.1Gs sustained to 1.4Gs sustained when they switched from RE71s to RRs. That’s gotta be worth something time wise. |

Toyo RR are the spec tire in many of the NASA classes. Most applicable to us is that they are Spec tire in American iron with a width limit of 275. So if the Mustangs can race them at 275 width, they should be able to endure hpde’s in our F80s. Word is that they grip and are consistent down to the cords and have 1/2 the life of NT01s. Not many tires wear like an NT01 though so 1/2 life is probably acceptable.

I'm getting 1.3G with NT01. I think I may just try this same setup out to be honest. I've got the same wheels. |

Would love to see a video of 1.3G sustained on NT01s! I’ve been running RE71Rs that are supposedly more grippy then NT01 and only see 1.3G as a blip during compression or banking.

I'm sorely out of practice but I got ~2.5 hours today at my home track on a set of used NT01s on 18x10/18x11 with unknown heat cycle count. All tires showed ~5/32" tread depth at the start. Harry's was showing 1.15G sustained with 35psi front/rear. I haven't measured the tread depth after the day, but visually the tires barely wore compared to the stock Sport Cup 2 on the OEM wheels.
Not having been on track in 7 months, I was not especially gentle with my inputs. Hopefully I'll get 2-3 days/month over the summer and can get more comfortable with the car. It was cool enough today(~70F/21C) that heat management wasn't a problem with the tires, I got 45 minutes in my last stint albeit mostly practicing rolling into the throttle apex onwards, so I wasn't heating the fronts as much. |

Toyo RRs. They can sure take a pounding and don't suffer from tread squirm or irregular wear like the RE71Rs do. Running around 40psi hot or 30psi dead cold. Need to try taking a pound or two out of air and see how they feel.
As far as ultimate grip, I think my Harry's app is messed up. It was showinght exact 1.1-1.2 max sustained G as the RE71Rs but minimum corner speed was actually 3-4 mph faster. My overall laptimes were equal so maybe my butt dyno is calibrated to RE71Rs. A few more time out will give me a better idea. They do make noise when you've gone over the limit. They feel very familiar to the RE71Rs but don't exhibit any of their bad traights. I'll be running these until something better comes along. 00F85B82-2F0A-43A2-9781-4E1A580EFF35 by D S, on Flickr 69B4DC57-61E4-454A-99A2-19FDC4830B21 by D S, on Flickr

I think RRs will be my next tire. I suspect I'll dumpster the NT01s before I cord them. Another outing comparing the NT01 to my OEM Cup 2, and the NT01 rears just aren't hooking reliably out of corners like the Cup 2. But the front-end grip with the NT01 > Cup 2. If I had more time I would have run the NT01 up front and the Cup 2 in the rear just for giggles.
Adding an AiM Solo so that I can be a bit more scientific about my data. |

What's your ride height set to? I found that raising the front slightly improved corner exit traction.

Great thread - I've been contemplating switching it up from my usual RE71Rs for my next set of track tires, and RRs and R1s are on the short list. My car has Ohlins coil overs and a square setup of 18x10 BW forged wheels, so thinking I'll stick with 275/35 tires.
I have no complaints about RE71s, just thought I might wanna try something stickier... but I'd still like something that provides good feedback as I near the edge of the friction circle. Tire consistency, without any sudden/rapid fall off, is also a priority - both within a session, as well as through the course of a season (of maybe 6 - 8 track days). Do you guys think RRs or R1s would be the better incremental step from RE71Rs?

I've been running the AR-1's on my E36 track car and I have to say that so far they are a bit quicker than the Nitto's. I haven't corded them yet but they haven't heat cycled out and are just as quick after 7 days as when new.

still a little too early to tell, but i can say that i did set a new PB on the ar1's after testing the nt01's first. so let's see how they go as they wear down.
