In MN there's a law against this ... one of them is (was?) "exhibition of speed" or some such and another related one to this was like "exhibitional display" or similar.

Basically meant to be catchalls for douchebags who aren't recklessly driving or speeding.

They may have changed them or no longer enforce them but ... they used to ...

We have similar laws, but I would pop him for the loud/modified exhaust instead. With the way California is changing, he would have to revert the car back to stock in order to pass smog if I send him to a smog referee.

Prices are through the roof on these right now and I think for good reason but it's still crazy to me that a late 90s turbo might have only been driven for 25-50k miles. What were the owners thinking!?!

Over the past 5 months I've been resurrecting a VW Corrado VR6 and it has been a blessing and a curse. Everything needs to be replaced and major systems keep breaking down but for the most part you can tackle it yourself as long as you're willing to track down parts. I've bought stuff from Greece, Latvia, Germany, the UK, Ukraine, and even Russia and get to DIY most of it.

I would never feel comfortable doing work on a 993 since record keeping is almost as important as not driving them. At the end of the day whatever you drive should bring you enjoyment and the VW has taught me that people appreciate the odd relic out on the road even more than they're impressed with your top end garage queen.

Driving the old VW is visceral, noisy, and uncertain and people will literally follow me to my next stop to talk about the time they saw one in college or the Scirocco they once had. It's a wild experience. I wonder whether I'd ever have as much fun in a modern car.

Then I go drive my F80 and I marvel at how far we've come. I'm sure there are better cars but there's a sweet spot for tooling around town and it might be it. Sorry for the novel!
My first car that was really mine was actually a VW. 04 Jetta GLI 1.8T.

Had the car for 14 years. So, in a lot of ways I kind of circled back.

Mmmm the Corrado VR6… brings back some memories. I had three Corrados, one G60 and two VR6s back in the early 90’s. The Corrado replaced my 84 Scirocco that I drove for 5 years and was one of the most fun and reliable cars I’ve ever owned. The Corrado was a huge step up from the Scirocco in performance and build quality and the VR6 had an amazing sound. My Corrado was the last VW I owned before I switched to BMW.

I'm sure most states got the same law we do, excessive noise law. We also have a "Quiet from 11PM to 7AM" or something like that law in neighborhoods, towns, cities or wherever else you might bother people.

It is clear that the M3 is the more practical of the two. I was however pleasantly surprised with what the 911 can do. We went to join friends at their cottage a few weeks ago, we fit 2 hand carry-on suite cases in the frunk with 8 bottles of wine and a softbag with beach gear. Had another carry-on behind the rear seats alongside the fishing gear, fishing poles and kites. While all four of us were installed confortably in our seats for the 2.5 hour drive. Kids did not complain once about lack of space.

That's awesome thanks for sharing. They really do drive so well when they're dialed in, and since my speedometer reads 7 mph high at cruising speeds I believe that I'm about to blast off into space in 5th gear.

Here's my '93 as of yesterday. I can't even start to list what I've done to it but I'm pretty sure I'm close to doubling the cost of the car and it still rattles and squeaks like a junkyard special 😂

On Speedlines no less!

Never been a VW boy, I mean I like them, but it's great how much of a cult following the 90s and 00s VWs have. I've been to the Wörthersee meet in Austria once, it was nuts.

And it's interesting and sad how the affordable sports coupe segment has just died over the years.

Awesome looking Corrado! That’s the same color my G60 was. I couldn’t believe how much the VR6 changed the character of the car. The G60 completely ran out of steam at high revs and didn’t sound particularly good either, especially at idle. After the G60, the VR6 was a revelation.

Now if I could only find a Mark I Scirocco that wasn’t a pile of iron oxide to have fun with….

It's funny you mention that. I honestly never loved VW and have only owned one other than this (one of the dieselgate wagons) but a guy I knew back in the day had a nugget yellow G60 and I wanted to buy it so badly. His price was way out of my range as an 18 y/o but I never forgot about it and resolved a couple years back to find a good one.

They were really cheap 5-10 years ago but the survivors are getting expensive. IIRC only 5k VR6s were sold in North America so there really aren't many left running.

Not really that many left in Germany either. mobile.de shows 80ish and most are G60s. People want high teens/ low 20s for seemingly sorted examples.

I grew up in this VW.

On a fun side note the brother of a friend of mine is considering getting an i30N for a new daily/track toy and slapping a stage 2 on it

///N starting to get out there!
