I went to another dealership in the city and wanna see if they could adjust the issue. Unfortunately they also can't find the issue.

this noise driving me nuts and I did some research on bimmerpost that there are a design flaw where pebbles maybe stucked between the shield and rotor and what i need to do is push the shield a little further back. Is it possible to do it while the wheel is on? Greatly appreciated fellows!
Yeah its easy to do with the wheels on I imagine pretty much everyone that's done some bending has done it this way. You can just reach inside (make sure the rotors are cooled off first) and physically push the shield away from the rotor. Its pretty amazing how flimsy/malleable the shield itself is and with a bit of pressure you can do it with your bare hand, no tools required.

Got this for the first time yesterday. I nearly crapped my pants as I though I ran something over and potentially damaged my oil cooler while I was at it. Luckily the noise went away after about a couple hundred yards.

Noise was extremely embarassing. I can understand the metallic whine coming from the rotors but the crunching plastic bottle noise made no sense.

First time I heard it, I swore my exhaust fell of and was dragging on the ground for a few hundred yards. Definitely stained my boxers.

I am having a lot of problems with scraping sounds.. I keep thinking it is coming from my rear left wheel.. Not sure if it is that or the bottom of the car. It almost sounds like there is a rock caught between the break rotor and caliper.. It is driving me crazy.. One thing i noticed about this car is it attracts rocks i litterally hear all the lil rocks flying around the car .. So annoying!! My e92 did not have this issue

I agree. The noise from pebble/rocks on the road is really loud in the F80. No comparison with my E90. Much louder. It feels like someone is throwing pebbles at the undercarriage.

I'm very surprised BMW hasn't addressed this by now. Or at the very least put out a release letting owners know they are aware of the issue and are looking at potential fixes. Hope it gets worked out soon for you all.

Likely has to be related to diminished sound insulation material (for weight reduction purposes) compared to the E9x.

I just saw this thread-New owner and I didn't know that this was a 'thing'...

10 weeks & 3300 miles- 4 times I have heard this noise exactly what others have described.

First and second times I heard the noise I thought 'wtf? then on third occurrence I thought about each situation and the forth time I figured out what was the one-single-common-variable..

Dry body & Cold started in a dry garage after being driven in the Rain. Rain. Rain and.... Rain. (put up wet)

I had been driving in the rain when parked each time and I assume that the metal on metal noise was being caused by the pads being seated so close on the rotors as part of the 'brakes wipe themselves when wet' thing. Once the car figures it doesn't need to wipe anymore, it pulls the pads back off the rotors.

YMMV

I'd like to echo the statements about rock noise being very pronounced with this car.

I drove down a driveway at work full of a ton of gravel and holy crap was i annoyed.
On top of that, once I left it was nothing but scrape, scrape, scrape on the drive home.

If i'm able to avoid the gravel I can drive for days without hearing scrape.

BMW must be aware of the issue and I hope a solution is coming soon. This car has been out for 9 or 10 months now so they should have some solution.

The funny thing is, 50 people can state exactly what the problem is, down to a detailed solution, and yet, someone always thinks they are unique. Yes, you are a precious little unique snowflake.

I think it was pretty clear what I posted, but here, I'll spell it out for you: the problem, as most people on her have come to a consensus on, is that rocks are getting stuck between the brake shield and the rotor, and the noise you are hearing is the rocks/pebbles scraping.

Despite your belief that you are a unique snowflake, it has nothing to do with:

the car figuring out that it doesn't need to wipe the brakes clean.

Feel like I should just add my 2 cents here. Just picked up the car Saturday and hears the noise 3 times. I have a total of like 100 miles on it. As long as others have the same issue I am ok with it haha.

Are everyone taking their cars in at least onced for this issue? If not, there will never be an official fix and you might also run a bigger risk to have to pay for damaged rotors yourself if you haven't logged a formal visit for the issue before it happens.

I brought mine in for the dreaded tin can noise a couple of weeks ago, but they found no rocks stuck. They said they readjusted my brakes and the associated wiring or something. It hasn't happened since. Hopefully it doesn't come back as that tin can noise is painful to the ears and embarrassing.

I never had any of this in my E90 M3.
After 400 miles in my new M3, I have had the screech six times. Comes out of nowhere, scares the hell out of me every time. Incredibly loud. Sounds like I hit an animal that screams. Always lasts for 2-3 seconds that feel like eternity. Today, someone asked my in the parking garage if my car was broken. He said it was incredibly loud outside of the car and scared the hell out if him.

Yeh a taxi driver said that to me a few days ago as I pulled out of a gas station.
I had my music on and didn't really hear anything but he looked at me funny, i opened the window, and he just said "brakes?". i drove off kinda annoyed.

Its definitely only happening rear left now as others have mentioned.
