Wow, this shit still happening. I haven't logged on in 1.5 years. Glass engine. I was seriously considering Dinan stage 3 tune with their heat exchanger & intake, but fuck it now. Even with the warranty. Yeah. The guy spun the glass engine and then tried to find info on the web and found this forum and thread and posted. |

Said screw if. Ordered a billet Crank Hub. Dirt cheap to get it installed here in Germany so I can't pass it up.

So, having my crank hub installed for peace of mind and because I'm putting down pipes and a stage 2 tune it. The mechanic, very good friend of mine, said that it was at the 5 o'clock and would've spun at any time. My car is stock and a DCT comp car. I play around a lot on the autobahn and other country back roads and never thought twice about using the kick down. Just thought I'd share.

I just got the SSR 4-pin one installed here locally and wasn't THAT bad price-wise. That's the one that they recommended and had more experience going with so that's where I went. They billed 20hrs and that included changing the plugs, charge pipes, a lot of new gaskets, etc.
Parts/labor/install was ~3200, so ~4400 since I bought the SSR parts. Not a cheap thing to have done at all but the peace of mind is good as I set out to go with larger turbos, etc. They said everything looked pretty good and I wasn't close to spinning anything, especially compared to some that they have seen. Car is tuned with BM3 stg1 and I have ~63k miles on it. Car is also a 6mt fwiw |

overall stats as of this moment and assuming the responses are honest, 1260 votes, with 125 reported spun crank hubs, for about 1 in 10 cars. a little higher than i thought. but still 90 percent chance it wont happen.. this is not reflective of modded vs not, which im sure would increase the odds, as well as manual vs dct. interesting to see so many responses.

Anecdotally from the shop that did mine - they've seen more vehicles with problems in DCT than the manuals due to the transmission kicking down a couple gears and hitting hard - especially when modded. They say they've done 30-40 CH jobs and most have been DCT cars. They're also the go-to shop that get referrals from other local performance shops and also the local BMW dealer for non-warranty situations. All IMO: if you're a DCT and plan to mod I'd invest in the peace of mind and safety. Yours might not spin at all, but if it does you'd want to do a SCH fix at the same time as fixing it: so you end up doing it regardless and hopefully no other engine damage occured. |

Yea, bunch of good points there. the chances of it occurring are quite low for a manual car vs dct. The odds of internal damage seems to be a fraction of the cars with sch as well. Ive felt no need to do mine, and im sitting in the 500-550 range with my manual 16 m4.. but the nightmare possibility although slight is still there. |

Just did mine, went with VTT hub, CBC and crank seal guard. Done, no more second guessing/debating myself lol.

Admittedly it's been worth my peace of mind during the very infrequent beating the car takes. These things are just so powerful on the street it's unreasonable to really wring out a couple gears lol. |

Could a tuner adjust the power during a kickdown shift? or at least remove the kickdown from the go pedal?
2015 50k miles last 20k miles on BM3 stage 2 CS. I am getting CBC installed next week as I recently changed to the BM3 multimap and will be using the higher power 91 and 93 octane stage 2 tunes. |

Here is the March 31, 2022 Poll Data summarized:
Stock [N=758] vs Modified [N=587]: Stock F/R: 2.9% Modified F/R: 18.9% 6MT [N=465] vs. DCT [N=880] + Stock vs. Modified 6MT: Stock [N=277] F/R: 4.33% Modified [N=188] F/R: 23.9% DCT: Stock [N=481] F/R: 2.08% Modified [N=399] F/R: 16.54% Failure Rate by MY 2015 [N= 459]: 9.59% 2016 [N= 323]: 8.05% 2017 [N= 192]: 7.29% 2018+ [N= 371]: 13.21% Interesting that the 6MT F/R is actually higher than DCT, since everything I've read seems to indicate harshness of DCT being a major factor. However, the biggest contributor is still modified vs. stock. Also interesting that 2018 seems to have a slightly higher F/R than the other MYs even though the ratio of modified vs. stock is similar to other years. 550whp. My 2021 S55 spun its hub. Just thought id share data on the final year of production for S55. 14k miles. DCT.
Never launched, Never used kickdown. never took it above 7k rpms on the last 10k miles. Spun when I turned the car on. Its my DD, 90% of the time I chill in the slow lane, other 10% I have fun on the weekends roll racing. New hub is in, Car is working great. Cheers

No head damage, a spun hub always throws timing off. Its rare for head damage. To confirm it spun you get all the codes or partial, then you take the crankhub out to confirm. Car was limp, no boost, barely drove. When we took the crankhub out there was major scoring on the hub. Just required timing adjustments. Im glad I already had a crankhub appointment that day. I believe the codes I got were vanos related.
