I have had serious reservations about the front end on this thing, and thought maybe, just maybe, it would look better in person. So I showed up to the Morristown BMW unveiling and unbeknownst to me, it was also a car show, so I was given a spot right next to the new M4. Had I known, I would have washed the car! Wasn't able to sit in the G80, but I just can't get into the look of the car, especially compared to my F80.

I haven't launched once either. Not even on a loaner car. But I understand my desires are not everyone's desires, so just because I don't care about LC doesn't mean for someone else it is not the most important thing in the world.

Also, if it disables itself in the M8 after 50 LCs, the M3 has much less power and torque so maybe that number will rise

I'm not too concerned about the implications of LC issues and track use, as at the track we shouldn't be in the fastest shift mode anyway.

My guess would be that Engineering focused on this to allay fears of the move to the ZF from DCT. If they did it, they probably knew that there was an impact to longevity, hence maybe the programmed delay after 100 launches?

Its all about compromises when you design build a car with a defined cost ceiling.

What it seems like is that in LC it uses a faster than normal shift speed that probably isn’t available during any other type of driving. Must be a lot of work though to replace planetary clutch packs if someone burns them up doing triple digit launches

I'm also clear that this is not a BMW problem, it's a ZF problem. People are still getting chubby thinking of the Quattroformagio -which is riskier than having no protection while interfacing with a lady of the night- which have the same ZF and which surely has the same issue.

I wish they had kept the DCT, but that didn't allow for the AWD which inexplicably some M3 owners want. So I consider it's their fault we lost the DCT. I wish they had just kept buying Audis and left BMW alone
What the fucking fuck?

130k miles for the transmission? That is horrid, is this legit?

From all the manual posts I'm reading on the G8X forums it seems like that transmission needs some work too. I definitely noticed a very weird feeling clutch (when the car was off at least), felt a bit more springy then BMW's of past. Will have to see when I drive one eventually I guess.

On the use of LC, the thing that is interesting to me is the Dodge Challengers & Chargers (or any other performance FCA vehicle really) all use ZF8 iterations but I haven't heard much from that side of the universe about a change in shift speed, and those guys must launch the crap out of their cars since those really are made for 0-60 & 1/4 mile type driving. So really I don't know what to make of it, hence my interest in following that thread!

But none of them actually achieve a good launch unless using a prepared surface. Night and day vs the M8s etc which are AWD and launch like a bat out of hell.

First endless threads and posts about how it sucks they didn't develop the 6MT more, now it's turning into 'although they indeed strengthed the 6MT we are going to complain it's somehow worse than the F8X'

Yeah, that'll be the cycle. A buddy picked up his G8X yesterday and he loves the manual. He traded his F8X. My work schedule has been crap, but I'm hoping to see/drive it Sunday or Monday.

That doesn’t make it any better if this indeed is a problem.

Like the entire point was never that they can’t compromise on if, but if they do/did they should be upfront about it.

Time will tell how this turns out, it’s complete bs from BMW if true.

Yeah that’s the new term, “dated”. Dumbest shit ever, it’s only because they know the natural progression of the model cycle. That M5, like the F8x, will still have random people asking if you just bought it ten years from now. Both cars look modern as hell. Dated to me is a 370Z hah.

The other M cars will never look dated compared to the G series because they don't even look like the same family.

That M5 is lovely and will keep looking lovely for a gooood while.

The thing looks huge compared to the M5, like what the hell is going on with it
