So I called my insurance (State Farm) and at first they said sure well pay for a rental car. That's absolutely ridiculous. This is why insurance companies get sued all of the time.

Imagine if you needed the car to get to work and had no other possible options. Hell yes I would sue. I would sue for the rental car plus any lost wages, maybe more.

Part of the reason cars with paintwork are worth less is that the potential buyer never knows how well the car was repaired, what corners were cut when repairing, if they used quality parts, etc. It's a big risk on the buyer's side, so there is an adjustment to the price of any car with prior damage to it as a result.

I didn’t take pics during the tear down but it was impressive. They had to take a saw and cut the whole left rear quarter panel off which went all the way to the B pillar. The frame was pretty damaged and all of the panel gaps were off. The damage was a lot worse than the initial photos above would suggest.

All I can say is THANK GOD I leased it. Imagine if I owned it. I’d be stuck with a beautiful but worthless M3. The resale value would be terrible. I leased my GT-R and then bought the car when the lease ended. If this happened to the GT-R, I would have been crying.

So yeah, I would say that a huge advantage of leasing, aside from writing it off as a business expense, is that if the car gets damaged, you can just turn it in and walk away.
I am currently going through the same thing. My M3 was rear ended. It is approaching two months now and I still don't have it back from Rallye Collision. The car was only 10 months old with 7k miles on it when I got into the accident. I have it for another two years. I would like to keep it but will see how it looks and drives once I get it back. 😩

Yea the only good option if you had to keep it would be to keep it for like 10 years. The hit you'll take on the resale won't be as bad.

Well, maybe not worthless, but it would be worth significantly less than a clean car. I'm guessing it would sell for $10K less than a clean car. I don't think anyone would intentionally want to buy this car with frame damage, unless someone really couldn't afford a clean example and was willing to drive a car that had frame damage. I will say that the shop did an amazing job and the car actually felt fine when I got it back. That said, I would never want to own a car that had a bent frame that was straightened out.

Good question. I'm not sure. I just need a daily driver. If I have a 1000hp GT-R for the weekends, I don't really need anything too crazy for a daily. I thought maybe a G20 M340i with a downpipe and tune. That would pretty much equal the performance of my M3. Another BMW option, lol, would be a Supra. I drove my friend's MKV Supra with a downpipe and tune, back to back with my M3, and it was faster. Fun car, and that B58 engine has an exhaust note that sounded so much better than the my M3. Not that practical though with only 2 seats so that may be a deal breaker. I tried to convince myself to get a Tesla Model 3 Performance but after test driving a few, it's a no go. Is it fast? Hell yes it is. Blows the M3 away. But I just go enjoyment out of driving a car that makes no noise and doesn't shift gears. It just doesn't feel like a car.

I had an S550 which was comfy but just too big. Like driving a yacht. A 3 series is more practical size wise. Speaking of totally impractical, I drove a friend's modified SVT Raptor. That's a bad ass truck. Way too big for the tight streets of LA but for some reason, it was fun. Plus, you can completely disregard speed bumps, curbs, or even small cars. You just drive right over them!

I cannot wait until fully autonomous cars arrive. A lot of these idiots should not have the privilege to drive on public roads, and they honestly don't have any interest in driving (it's an inconvenience for them).

In OC, CA, here's the idiot car list to watch out for:

- Toyota Prius
- Older Toyota Prius (even worse than the newer ones)
- Lexus RX300/330/350/Hybrid
- Toyota, Honda, KIA Minivans
- New Honda Civic, KIA, Hyundai, small Jeep (or any $159 lease special)
- VW Jetta
- Non-modified Subaru's
- Modified Jeeps
- Any Tesla Cult Member (major talegate, and cut people off aggressively, yet they think others dislike them because they're driving an EV - not because they drive like deusche bags). Caveat: Not all Tesla owners behave like this, some genuinely want a nice EV to drive, and don't have a chip on their shoulder.
- Big trucks (if Diesel, add extra ahole points)

I have the Tesla Model 3 Performance. It definitely accelerates faster then the M3. I actually like how quiet the car drives and no gears to shift through. It's a very comfortable commuter. Really fast when you want it or just a normal car when you drive it.

You can always wait for that CyberTruck when that comes out in 2021. My deposit is already down for one.

Would it have been better if they had "cut" or removed the part of the frame and welded a new replacement piece, or was the damage at the monoframe central piece. I think the front and rear subframes can be replaced.

Damn, I didn't even know a forged wheel could bend like that - and trust me, I tried..

I could only imagine what the rest of the suspension components and frame looked like.. #SwissCheese

Actually, the bill for replacing the single left rear rim was $1500!

I actually have a video of the collision. My friend's security camera constantly records so the event was captured. She comes down the street, hits my car, spins and ends up on the sidewalk between two huge trees. She would have been toast if she had hit either of those trees.

Damn, you're right about the a tree collision, I lost a friend like that after she was accidentally bumped off the road by an old lady..

I guess we gotta look at the bright side; she'll live another day to sue her insurance company for her negligence..

Thanks for sharing the story..
