I didn't like the idea of engine noise being filtered into the speakers when I first heard about it. My attitude has changed. First because the car sounds amazing direct. I have a vert so I really get to hear it. Top & windows down, the engine bloody roars. Fantastic!
But BMW will tell you that they piped sound into the speakers because the cabin insulation is too good. That is undeniably true. When I put the top up - its pretty obvious that if not for the speaker sound that's piped in - the interior sound would be unsatisfying. Doesn't make sense for the engine to be louder - hell it sounds like a Harley already. I suppose they could use less sound dampening in the cabin but - I kinda like that. I think the speaker solution works. Surprised to hear myself say that, but I really think it does.

I could rebuild the whole engine faster than finding the right setting from there.

Not saying this is wrong. In fact it's probably a fair point. But this sentence made me laugh. Like wine tasting talking about the nose or bouquet. We are now engine sound tasting.

Definitely agree, especially with valves open.
Even though the old V8 SCREAMED at high revs, I always thought that it sounded muffled and boring at low revs in daily traffic. I just love the pops, burbles and noises the F80 exhaust makes at all times throughout the rev range (maybe minus the 90 seconds of cold start)

Love the sound in stock form. It's intoxicating, especially in M2-sport plus. No plans for aftermarket exhaust here.

Me too. After having the car a week I concluded that BMW did a good job and decided to leave it alone.

I know about the ASD and even I barely notice or care much for it.
Had my break-in service on Monday. (I was at 930 or so, brought my car in for another reason but my car is ready for it. I saw it when my Key's Data was shown to me.) So after going to work. I had my dealership pick me up to pick up my car. When I drove home, I noticed right away the car sounded deeper then before. It was a surprise to me as I didn't expect that to change. Made me even happier to own the car

Are most of you guys referring to the exhaust? How about the engine are you not disappointed it's not very exciting above 6000rpm. To me (coming from E46) riding that engine in the high revs is what makes the car so exciting.
I'm not trying to bash the engine here I would really like some honest feedback as M4 is potential buy failing M2. Do you find yourself not taking it to redline so much as there is no point from a performance and sound perspective. I need some more seat time in one I think. Some opinions from those who have stepped out of a E46 or e92 would be good too |

I'm perfectly satisfied with how the M3/M4 sounds as stock. But honestly if the engine noise and stuff is a huge deal, then probably remove the ASD and go get new exhaust might help. Also, I don't believe the M2 sounds THAT much better then it's bigger sisters (M3/M4) but it isn't out yet, I will probably try to test drive one when my dealership gets one :P

Ohh and I forgot to add...I realllly hope my kids get scared. Why? 1.) So I can tell them the sound is produced by the monster living inside the car. And if they get near daddy's car when I'm not around....

I think the car sounds much better with the harness unplugged.

haha I agree it sounds good in stock form. I drove my coworkers to lunch yesterday and I am quoting what they said after I dropped them off to park. "Your car sounded like a FU%$ing beast when you took off. We were like holy crap!"

LOVE the sound of this car, both windows up and down!! I do want MPE, but could easily live with stock exhaust.
In various threads folks talk about getting the exhaust to "pop" or make extra noise by hammering the throttle then letting off. I have tried to replicate this with no luck. What do I need to do? Or am I misinterpreting comments? -X- |
