Nice improvement over stock head. Do you think jb4 with downpipes will have benefits of these high flow heads?

Time will tell the true benefits of this cylinder head setup. I would expect it to help even simple bolt on cars however yes.

Jason, what power level do you think the upgraded rods & pistons become necessary/recommended? Not looking for guarantees here, just advice. 600whp? 650? 700+?

I think when it comes to reliability of pushing the platform and protecting your investment anything above 600lb/ft would be advisable to use a stronger rod and piston setup.

If these heads help specially in upper rpm as show in OP I'm definitely in!

Thanks guys! There is a ton of time invested in trying to bring this aftermarket aspect to the community. I am very excited with the progress we made and believe this motor combo will compliment the new turbo setup perfectly.

Engine is assembled and is going back in the car this week. This engine pictured will be in our 6-Speed M3 , and another one is currently being built for our record holding M4.

Are the compression ratios changed here? Or just stronger?

We will find out soon. We are finishing up the port injection install now and should have it running in the next day or so.

First off, awesome stuff from TPG. This level of power is not at all my area of focus, but I can appreciate that you are spending serious time on flow and capability to withstand.

Second, I hope people know we don't know the true capability of the stock block yet. There's an enormous difference between how much a block can withstand the abuse of on-the-edge tuning, maxxed out fueling, EGTs, etc.....and what a block can withstand with proper fueling, temperature controls, and a well dialed in tune.

Lastly, the belief that the S55 should be able to withstand higher power outputs than the N54 is missing important context. The S55 is no doubt better cooled stock, but the rotating assembly is notably lighter. But perhaps more importantly, the S55 block itself is notably lighter because they used twin-arc-sprayed coatings for the cylinders rather than the N54's heavy - but sturdy - aluminum block with cast iron cylinder liners.

It's all trade-offs. The S55 is a lighter and more sophisticated and better cooled engine than the N54 ever was - but that DOESNT mean it can handle 2.5-3x power output increases like the N54 does on the stock block/assembly.

Joe

P.s. Official engine weight tallies indicate the S55 is heavier than the N54. I believe that is including ancillaries and not just block to block, but I could be wrong.

Great points Joe!

No we do not know the limitation of the stock block. It could be higher than we expect , however having seen and personally windowed a $20,000 engine. We thought it best to make sure this wasn't the case again.

As time progresses I am sure people will push the platform higher and higher with less worry about breakage. That time will come when the cost of a replacement engine become less and the availability becomes greater.

As for TPG, we are not looking to just simply improve the reliability of the current engine at higher power levels, but to constantly advance and exceed the expectations. I believe this new motor program will prove itself to be a very viable option for those looking to really push the envelope of these cars. I also EXPECT us to perform at a very high level this year , not only setting new records, but to set new industry standards.
